A coalition of Democrats and Republicans Thursday forced a House floor vote to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits for three years. The measure passed 230–196 in favor of extending the credits, which were to expire at the end of 2025.

Only one Florida Republican, Rep. Maria Salazar of Miami, voted in favor.

The vote followed a bipartisan discharge petition, which pushed the issue onto the House floor by bypassing both committee review and the Speaker’s control of the agenda.

The petition succeeded because four House Republicans – none from Florida – signed on, providing the votes needed to force action.

Following the vote, Congresswoman Kathy Castor, who represents Florida’s 14th Congressional District, responded on X, saying “Now this gives us momentum. There are bipartisan talks in the Senate. They cannot ignore 230 votes.”

Castor called the outcome “a big win,” but the measure still faces uncertainty. President Trump, who has a record of moving forward despite congressional approval or disapproval, has repeatedly said he will not extend ACA tax credits.

Instead, Trump has said this week that he plans to engage major health insurance companies directly to negotiate ways to lower health care costs.

At stake are an estimated 4.7 million Floridians who rely on ACA tax credits to afford coverage.
