While the U.S. Senate recently passed a resolution declaring Oct. 10, Charlie Kirk’s birthday, a National Day of Remembrance for him, the Pinellas County Commission has established its own locally. The commission proclaimed Sept. 10, the date Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley State, as the county’s official Day of Remembrance.
The proclamation highlights Kirk’s life as a “passionate advocate, author, and commentator whose work influenced countless individuals across the nation.”
“In Pinellas County, we encourage residents to reflect on [Kirk’s] contributions, celebrate his legacy, and continue the work of strengthening our communities through civic engagement,” the proclamation states.
The proclamation was signed by the county’s six Republican commissioners – Brian Scott, Dave Eggers, Chris Latvala, Vince Nowicki, Kathleen Peters and Chris Scherer. Democratic commissioner Rene Flowers did not sign.
Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna, who represents Florida’s 13th District, lauded the commission’s move on X, stating: “Today, my staff had the privilege of accepting this proclamation from the Pinellas County Board of Commissioners.”
She added: “Charlie’s voice, leadership, and unwavering dedication to this country have inspired countless lives, including my own. It is truly humbling to see his legacy honored in such a meaningful way, right here in our community.”
The Pinellas County Board of Commissioners was not immediately available for comment on the proclamation.
