GOP Representative Berny Jacques is demanding the firing of Jay S. Jackson, a Senior Army instructor at Boca Ciega High School’s Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps in Gulfport, after Jackson posted allegedly celebratory remarks on Facebook about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

In screenshots shared by Jacques, Jackson wrote: “Charlie Kirk was killed over his Radical Racist GOP beliefs. Agent Orange allowed Americans to storm the Capitol Whitehouse and not certify the free election. Agent Orange radicalized Americans for violence. You get what you preach. He said it’s okay for a few to die to protect gun rights. He got the GUN.”

Jacques complained that Jackson – rather than retracting his comments – “doubled down” hours later, posting, “When you speak or talk of your future. Sometimes you get what you wanted,” – followed by an emoji of eyes and a toy gun.

In a letter to Pinellas County Schools Superintendent Kevin Hendrick, Jacques called the comments “abhorrent, unbecoming, and unacceptable from any educator entrusted with our children, entrusted with our future soldiers, or representing Pinellas County Schools.” He urged Hendrick to fire Jackson, writing, “I trust under your leadership this kind of vile behavior will not be tolerated and Colonel Jackson’s position will be terminated.”

Jacques’s demand comes amid a wave of firings in Tampa Bay and nationwide, targeting rhetoric that criticizes Kirk, who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University Sept. 10. Following Kirk’s death, Florida’s Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas issued a memo warning teachers that they could face investigation and sanction for any “despicable” social media posts about Kirk.

“While educators have First Amendment rights, these rights do not extend without limit into professional duties,” read the memo. Posting on X, Jacques was less subtle. “Enough is enough!” he wrote. “Every last one of these so-called educators celebrating this heinous act must be purged from our schools.”

Jackson is the second teacher Jacques has demanded be fired, having already called out a Starkey Elementary teacher for posting “good riddance” about Kirk and condemning his stance on abortion.

Pinellas County Schools released a statement concerning the allegations: “These matters are being handled according to School Board policies and procedures … We expect civility, kindness, and respectful dialogue within our school communities.”
