Residents will gather Saturday for a “Burn the Bill Rally” to protest rising electricity costs from Tampa Electric Company, which has imposed two rate hikes this year adding roughly $29 to $38 to monthly bills. Led by environmental advocate Walter L. Smith II and joined by U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor and other local officials, participants will symbolically toss their bills into a smoking trash bin outside the Dr. Walter Smith Library & Museum. Organizers say the demonstration highlights how steep energy costs are forcing families to choose between power, food and medicine.
